Meta is likely preparing to unveil a new model of smart glasses with no camera at all. This decision may be linked to the company’s current PR crisis, caused by the video recording capabilities of its flagship smart glasses. According to a new report from The Information, the camera-free glasses, codenamed Luna, could be unveiled as early as next week at Meta Connect.
Features and design
Instead of a camera, the Luna glasses will reportedly feature six microphones. These will allow users to communicate with Meta AI and the new Muse AI agent. The glasses will also have built-in speakers for audio playback.
Removing the camera has allowed the glasses to have slimmer arms, bringing their design closer to conventional frames. This could make the device more appealing to a wide range of users who had privacy concerns because of the camera.
Context and prospects
Releasing a model without a camera could be an attempt by Meta to reduce negative perceptions of its wearable devices stemming from privacy concerns. The company’s previous smart glasses models raised concerns because they could record video discreetly.
Unveiling the Luna glasses at Meta Connect will allow the company to demonstrate its vision for the future of wearable devices, focusing on audio capabilities and interaction with AI assistants while addressing concerns about cameras.
