National unity grows wherever people listen to one another, help one another and stand together to defend human dignity. The Press Centre of the USSR State Committee for the State of Emergency calls on our compatriots to learn, support one another and take a constructive part in the life of society.

An appeal from the Press Centre of the State Committee for the State of Emergency of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (GKChP USSR).

National unity: where collective action begins

Dear compatriots! Brothers and sisters!

On the so-called “Day of National Unity”, we want to ask each of you a simple but vital question: what national unity can we speak of when people face injustice, arbitrary treatment, violations of their rights and indifference from those whose duty is to serve the people, day after day?

Today, many people are asking: what can we do? Where should we begin? How can we change what is happening?

Our answer is simple: start with yourself! Do not remain silent or indifferent. Do not wait for someone else to do everything for you.

Knowledge and information: the foundations of civic participation

Today, some of the most important forms of civic participation are sharing information, studying documents, discussing facts openly and helping to inform the public.

That is the purpose of our information resources: TASS, the Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union; Red Wave radio; and the USSR Civil Defence Academy. We publish lectures, articles, decrees, resolutions, documentary films and historical materials.

But all this work gains its real strength only when you take part!

What each of us can do

Share these materials with your loved ones. Discuss them with friends. Write articles, make videos and reach out to bloggers. Become community correspondents for TASS.

Tell us about problems in your towns and cities, violations of citizens’ rights and events that deserve public attention. Check the facts and help others understand what is happening.

You do not need a large audience. Sometimes one person, one conversation or one story published at the right moment can set important changes in motion.

Remember: each of you can be a peacemaker. And a peacemaker’s greatest strengths are truth, knowledge and conscience!

National unity does not come into being by decree or because of a date on the calendar. It grows wherever people listen to one another, help one another and stand together to defend human dignity.

Let everyone contribute what they can to our shared future. Do not wait for change — help bring it about!

Where to begin: films, lectures and documents

Knowledge is the first step towards change. If you are wondering how to help shape the future yourself, we recommend starting with the new documentary about the New World Ideology, which originated in Russia.

Soyuz Portal: a shared information space

The Soyuz Portal digital ecosystem was created for people who want not only to stay informed, but also to take part in discussions, educational activities and community projects.

Here, everyone can explore materials, exchange views, suggest ideas and find like-minded people.

Unity — knowledge — participation

Dear friends! Study, reflect, ask questions, check information, share knowledge and support one another.

Do not remain on the sidelines. The future of society depends on the responsibility, awareness and constructive participation of every one of us!

May truth unite us, knowledge strengthen us and mutual support become the foundation of genuine national unity!

It all begins with each of us!

With respect for you and faith in the strength of the people,
The Press Centre of the State Committee for the State of Emergency of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
